Do you believe in fate? If not, this Cuban love story will make you believe!
Almost 13 years ago, I happened to cross paths with a handsome and charming 24 year old guy on the malecón (a seawall) in Havana, Cuba. And so began our Cuban love story!

Behind the Scenes of a Cuban Love Story
I’ve always loved the Spanish language and culture. In 8th grade, I chose Spanish as the language I wanted to study in school and I continued taking Spanish classes in college. In my sophomore year, I needed some classes just to fill up some credits. And so, I signed up for a class called the History and Culture of Cuba.
The second week into the class, I decided to switch to a class that focused on writing in Spanish since I thought that would help me improve my Spanish skills more than the history class on Cuba. Little did I know that in a few months I would be getting plenty of practice writing in Spanish! After just one Spanish writing class, I switched right on back to my History of Cuba class. So, so glad that I did.
That one little class (you know, the one that I almost didn’t even take?) totally changed my life.
How We Met
At the end of the semester, my History and Culture of Cuba class set off for a week-long trip to Havana. It didn’t take long after we landed in Cuba for me to fall in love (with Cuba that is!). Cuba is definitely an enchanting place that is unlike any other. The city of Havana has an energy, an indescribable magical feeling, that is palpable.
In Havana we toured museums and historical sites during the day and at night we danced and drank rum drinks in typical Cuban fashion. Two days before we were supposed to leave to fly back to the U.S., President George W. Bush made some unpopular changes to policies dealing with Cuba. Fidel Castro called for an anti-President Bush march along the malecón and we went to check it out. In the sea of people, we happened to walk past two guys sitting on the malecón who struck up a conversation with our Mexican classmate. One of those guys, Willy, just happened to be my future husband. Our group of three spent the afternoon walking around Havana with Willy and his friend and we made plans to go to the beach the next day.
I never in a million years thought that anything would become of my initial friendship with Willy. We kept in touch by writing letters to each other since Cubans had extremely limited access to the internet. (So now you can see how I got plenty of practice with writing in Spanish. I didn’t even need that class after all!)
To make a very long story short, Willy was sent to work in a medical clinic in Venezuela not long after we met. I visited him a few times there and in 2008 we flew from Venezuela to the U.S. together and we got married in 2010. It sure has been a fun and wild ride!
A Unique Gift for Him for Valentine’s Day
In the beginning of our relationship, time was definitely not on our side! We had bits and pieces of time together here and there when I would travel to see him for a week here or three weeks there. With our time together so limited, we quickly learned to value every minute that we had together and to not take our time together for granted!
This year I’m giving Willy a meaningful gift for Valentine’s Day, a wooden watch that is as unique as our Cuban love story! I chose this ebony and rosewood watch from Jord for him because I love how the reddish tone of the rosewood stands out against the ebony. Willy is always the life of any party and stands out in a crowd of people. This watch is the perfect fit for him!
JORD watches are luxurious, all-natural, wooden watches that are each crafted by hand. All of their watches are gorgeous, which made it so hard to choose!
For an extra special gift for your Valentine, you can even have the watch box (which is as gorgeous as the watch) or the watch itself engraved with a special message.
I hope Willy and I never forget how precious our time together really is! We have come so far when the odds were definitely not in our favor.
JORD and I have teamed up to give one of you a $100 gift code to spend on one of their luxurious watches! Everyone who enters is a winner, though! Just for entering the contest you will be sent a $25 gift code to spend on a unique watch for you or your Valentine. Good luck! You can go here to enter the giveaway! The contest will close 2/5 at 11:59pm.
